Dr. Susan has asked me to talk to our supporters about my journey to getting myself in shape and back to good health. And let me tell you it was a long, grueling journey. I spent a big chunk of my life drinking and using drugs. I smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. I ate fast food daily, I’m sure I could not have run a block without being on the verge of passing out. I had no idea about what getting my 8 hours meant and the only water I would get in the course of a day was from either beer or Mountain Dew. They say your body is a temple, but mine was most certainly a landfill. My life was a wreck and so was my health. I was on a fast track to die young. Fortunately through divine intervention I came to a point in my life where I knew the partying had to come to an end. That was a tremendous battle in itself, but I did it. And at that point I thought, no drugs, no alcohol. I got it licked. I seriously thought that was all I needed to do to get my health and my life back. But I was delusional. I had no conception of what “healthy” was. I was still 35 pounds overweight, had no muscle mass, and continued with the same habits I did before, besides the drugs and alcohol.

Then one day I was hanging out with some friends and a friend of mine said that he was trying to get into shape. He said he was doing 100 push-ups a day. I was pretty arrogant at the time and I said a hundred push-ups, Big deal! And right then he called me out and said I bet you can’t do ten. Thinking I was going to show him, I got down in the old front, lean, and rest and proceeded to do my ten push-ups, maybe even twenty just to make him look stupid. But to my surprise, when I got to about 6, I realized, I couldn’t do ten push-ups. Some might say, you can’t do ten push-ups? Oh well. But to me that was one of the most embarrassing and humbling experiences of my life. After that I looked at myself in the mirror and I was ashamed of what I had done to myself over all these years of abuse. At that moment I made a decision to turn my life around.

I started with a gym membership. It was slow at first. I would look around at all these people that were in great shape, but instead of letting them discourage me, I would use them as motivation. I would talk to them about what techniques they used and what they were eating and what supplements they were taking and really began to absorb the knowledge it took to truly get myself “healthy”.

Fast forward about 8 years. I am still at it. I exercise daily and put a lot of conscious thought into what I put into my body. I am not perfect by any means, I still find myself eating a big bowl of pasta at Olive Garden from time to time and find it difficult to turn down a burger or a brat at a summer BBQ, but I have come to the point where I realize that like everything else in life, we need to find that balance. Some experts may disagree, but I find it’s ok to eat a few slices of pepperoni pizza here and there, but we need to balance that with healthy eating and physical exertion the rest of the time. So it is my goal to post weekly about what I do to stay healthy. I will talk a little more about my journey to get here, some of the exercise routines I find beneficial, and the supplements that we can take to help promote muscle growth, support our cardiovascular system, and help us on our path to overall health.
